Chapter Four

“Bridgette! Wakey wakey, eggs and bakey!” There was a swoosh sound as she pulled the curtains back, sunlight flooding the room.

“Mom,” I whined, throwing my arm over my eyes. “Too early. Too bright.” Pulling the covers over my head, I rolled over, snuggling down into the feather comforters and pillows. My mom’s fingers gripped my shoulder, tugging at me.

“Come on, darling. Travis will be here any minute!” she said.

Travis!

My upper body snapped upward, flinging the covers from me. Travis would be arriving to take me to pie baking on the ranch and here I was in my jammie jams, yet another messy bun, and furry feeling teeth with what I had to assume was dragon breath. “Thanks, Mom!” I flew out of the bed, pulling my huge pink knit socks from my feet.

My mother was already rooting through my closet where—at some point unknown to me—she had hung all my clothing. “Bridgette, I swear there isn’t a stitch of clothing in this closet suitable for impressing a nice young man like Travis.”

Her opinion of Travis had certainly improved since our dinner on the ranch. I guess bringing a girl home sober and at a decent hour counts for something in a parent’s book.

I tripped over my boots while crossing the room to the bathroom to brush my teeth. “Mom, who said I’m trying to impress anyone. Travis and I are just friends—I barely know him.” I didn’t add that even though I hadn’t known him long he was on my mind every minute of the day since I saw his handsome face at the jukebox. I spit the toothpaste in the sink, then went back into the room to protect my wardrobe from my mother.

Mom pulled out a pink sweater, feeling the material between her forefinger and thumb. “Judging by the way your eyes light up every time that man steps in a room, I’d say different. Although I have noticed you’re a bit skittish around him. Which, I must add, is very unflattering. Confidence is sexy—”

“Mom. Stop. Please.” I grabbed the sweater from her hands. Leaning down, I picked up my skinny jeans, giving them a sniff. Still good. They could manage another day.

My mom eyed me disapprovingly. “Well, you aren’t going to wear those boots, for goodness’ sake, are you? Or that coat? Promise me, Bridgette, you will at least not wear the coat. You looked so pretty in floral. I have some ballet flats that might just fit—”

I sat down on the edge of the bed, pulling my boots on. I laced them up while my mom continued to chatter about importance of looking feminine to attract the attention of the opposite sex. Several times I chimed in with an ‘uh-huh’ here and there.

Standing by the mirror, I pulled a brush through my hair—it was useless, and no time to wash it. A few sprays of dry shampoo and a scrunchie later, I was ready for makeup.

Mascara, eyeliner, and a pearly pink shadow and I was ready to go.
